A journey from Canada to South Asia
Life is made of traces. Remaining traces, deep imprints, subtle energies. Traces weave the world, our culture, the memory that inhabit us. Why did I chose South Asia? Because in exploring that which appears different from me that I discover myself.

La vie est faite de traces. Traces résiduelles, empreintes profondes, énergies subtiles. Les traces tissent le monde, notre culture, la mémoire qui nous habite. Pourquoi avoir choisi l’Asie du Sud? Parce que c’est face à ce qui est différent de nous que l’on se découvre.
SHOVAN GANDHI
Shovan Gandhi is a visual artist and photographer based in New Delhi, India. His practice is drawn from his interest in architecture, design and cinema. His works in fashion and advertising are largely conceptual and experimental. Shovan has contributed to various magazines and publications nationally as well as internationally.
In personal projects, he focuses on photographing and archiving spaces of conflict with socio-cultural and political backgrounds. Through editing he explores the narrative possibilities of sequencing and story-telling, creating fictional or sometimes hyper-realities from the documentary. Currently, Shovan is working on a set of photo books based on his ongoing series of works.
Shovan Gandhi est artiste visuel et photographe basé à New Delhi, en Inde. Sa pratique est tirée de son intérêt pour l'architecture, le design et le cinéma. Ses travaux dans la mode et la publicité sont largement conceptuels et expérimentaux. Shovan a contribué à divers magazines et publications à l'échelle nationale et internationale.
Dans des projets personnels, il se concentre sur la photographie et l'archivage d'espaces de conflit avec des contextes socioculturels et politiques. À travers le montage, il explore les possibilités narratives du séquençage et de la narration, créant des fictions ou parfois des hyperréalités à partir du documentaire. Actuellement, Shovan travaille sur un ensemble de livres de photographie basés sur ses diverses séries en cours.

KIRAN AMBWANI
Passionate about people, the spaces they create and inhabit, their way of life and the arts, Kiran Ambwani is an Indian photographer based in Montreal.
Kiran's images reflect a sensitivity shaped by her background in anthropology and environmental studies, and her numerous travels. Driven by a curiosity for the problematic encountered by marginalized populations, Kiran has explored, among others, the lives of Tibetan monks in exile in south India, the survivors of child trafficking in Mumbai & Kathmandu, the inhabitants of the largest Asian slum (Dharavi), and post-disaster relief efforts in Nepal, Ecuador and Haiti. In order to share her environmental and social concerns with the public, Kiran's work documenting the human condition, human rights issues and foreign aid has been diffused by various publications worldwide, notably CBC Radio Canada, Chatelaine, Le Devoir, Vogue, MindFood, Travesias, Geo Plein Air and Indian Express.
Kiran has facilitated several photography workshops in Canada and abroad, for the general public, for patients living with cancer, for girls rescued from brothels in Nepal, for prostitutes and their children in India, and for victims of the earthquake in Ecuador. The resulting images have been shared with a wider audience through exhibitions and publications.
Kiran is a graduate of McGill University and the Dawson Institute of Photography in Montreal. She has participated in several groups and solo exhibitions of her personal work in Canada, Japan, India and Nepal.
Passionnée par les gens, les espaces qu'ils créent et habitent, leur mode de vie et les arts, Kiran Ambwani est une photographe engagée d’origine indienne et basée à Montréal.
Les images de Kiran reflètent une sensibilité aiguisée par ses études en anthropologie et études environnementales, ainsi que par ses nombreux voyages. Poussée par une vive curiosité envers les problématiques vécues par les populations défavorisées, elle a exploré, entre autres, la vie des moines tibétains en exil, les rescapées du trafic d'enfant à Mumbai et à Katmandou, les habitants du plus grand bidonville asiatique (Dharavi), et les efforts de secours post-catastrophe (post disaster relief efforts) au Népal, en Équateur et en Haiti. Afin de partager ses préoccupations environnementales et humanitaires avec différents publics, ses reportages ont été diffusés par plusieurs publications à travers le monde, notamment Radio Canada, Châtelaine, Le Devoir, Vogue, MindFood, Travesias, Geo Plein Air, et Indian Express.
Kiran a animé des ateliers de photographie au Canada et à l'étranger, pour le grand public, aux patients atteints du cancer, aux filles qui ont été rescapées de bordels au Népal, et plus récemment pour les victimes du tremblement de terre en Équateur. Les images qui en résultent ont été partagées avec un large public à travers des expositions et des publications.
Kiran est diplômée de l’Université McGill et l’Institut de Photographie Dawson à Montréal. Elle a pris part à plusieurs expositions individuelles et collectives au Canada, Japon, Nepal, et Inde.

MOBEEN ANSARI
Mobeen is a photojournalist, painter and sculptor based in Islamabad, Pakistan. A graduate of National College of Arts in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, his mission is to promote a positive and often unseen side of his country through his photographs. Challenged with loss of hearing at a very early age, Mobeen has always been observant of his surroundings and translates those visually through different mediums.
He has travelled across Pakistan and focuses on places off the beaten path - especially South Punjab and Wakhan Corridor up far North. In 2014 he published a photography book called Dharkan: the Heartbeat of a Nation which features portraits and stories of iconic people and unsung heroes of Pakistan. His next book is on religious minorities of Pakistan, which is titled White in the Flag. He has given two TED talks and has exhibited his works in USA, Italy, Qatar, China, Pakistan and Iraq.
Mobeen's short film Hellhole has won the Best Short Film (non fictional) Award at “Pakistan Calling Film Festival” and has screened at film festivals all over the world.
Mobeen est photojournaliste, peintre et sculpteur basé à Islamabad, au Pakistan. Diplômé du National College of Arts de Rawalpindi, au Pakistan, sa mission est de promouvoir les aspects positifs et souvent invisibles de son pays à travers ses photographies. Confronté à la perte d'audition à un très jeune âge, Mobeen a toujours été attentif à son environnement, une observation qu’il traduit visuellement à travers différents médiums.
Il a voyagé à travers le Pakistan et se concentre sur des endroits hors des sentiers battus - en particulier le sud du Punjab et le Corridor Wakhan dans le Grand Nord. En 2014, il a publié un livre de photographie intitulé Dharkan: le battement de coeur d'une nation qui présente des portraits et des histoires de personnages emblématiques et de héros méconnus du Pakistan. Son prochain livre est sur les minorités religieuses du Pakistan, qui est intitulé White in the Flag. Il a donné deux conférences TED et a exposé ses œuvres aux États-Unis, en Italie, au Qatar, en Chine, au Pakistan et en Irak.
Son court métrage Hellhole a remporté le prix du meilleur court métrage (non fictif) au Pakistan Calling Film Festival et a été projeté dans des festivals du monde entier.

Stéphane Desmeules
After studying arts and 3D animation, Stéphane Desmeules began his career in video games at Ubisoft in 1997 where he advanced from modeller, to team leader, and finally to manager of the graphic studio. In 2001, he began teaching 3D-Design until 2015. He then had the opportunity to share his knowledge in character and environment modelling, animation and texturing in schools for artists.
In parallel with his professional activities, Stéphane has illustrated three comics published by “Les edition Albin Michel” and “Édition Les 400 Coups” between 2001 and 2006. For the last 2 years, he has been working as a working community developer at Ubisoft where he organizes sharing events for artists and animator in addition to continuing to offer training on “Zbrush” and “Autodesk 3ds Max”.
Since the end of 2014 he is particularly interested in artistic photography in collaboration with dancers, performers and yogis.
Après des études en arts et en animation 3d, Stéphane amorce sa carrière en jeu vidéo chez Ubisoft en 1997 où il est tour à tour modeleur, chef d’équipe et gestionnaire du studio graphique. En 2001, il commence à enseigner la 3d jusqu’en 2015. Il a alors l’occasion de partager ses connaissances en modélisation de personnages et d’environnement, en animation et en création de textures dans des écoles d’art.
En parallèle de ses activités de formation, Stéphane illustre trois bandes dessinées publiées chez Albin Michel et aux éditions 400 Coups entre 2001 et 2006. Depuis deux ans, Stéphane est développeur de communauté métier à Ubisoft où il organise des événements de partage pour les artistes et animateurs, en plus de continuer à offrir des formations sur Zbrush et 3ds Max.
Depuis 2014, il s’intéresse particulièrement à la photographie artistique en collaboration avec des danseurs, performeurs et yogis.
Mariette Raina
Mariette Raina emigrated from France when she was 20 years old and settled in Montreal where she has resided since. Her various activities are simultaneously related by the same exploration : understanding human beings and the world.
Her research skills are based on her anthropological formation. In parallel to her studies, Mariette explores art through photography and performance, questioning the act of perception, the relationship toward one’s image, as well as the body as a vehicle of expression. She started teaching photography at UdM in 2015 among the “Cultural Activities Panel,” where she instructs the process of creation through photography.
Mariette graduated from University of Montreal (UdM) in Anthropology in 2014, where her main focus was ethnography. In 2016, she was hired by Never Apart as a monthly columnist for their online magazine, where she publishes articles along with her photographs.
Mariette Raina a émigré de France à l'âge de 20 ans et s'est installée à Montréal où elle réside depuis. Ses différentes activités sont simultanément reliées par la même exploration: la compréhension des êtres humains et du monde.
Ses compétences de recherche sont basées sur sa formation anthropologique. Parallèlement à ses études, Mariette explore l'art à travers la photographie et la performance, interrogeant l'acte de perception, le rapport à l'image, ainsi que le corps comme véhicule d'expression. Elle a commencé à enseigner la photographie à l'UdM en 2015 dans le cadre du «Cultural Activities Panel» où elle enseigne le processus de création à travers la photographie.
